Looking Into Long-Term Care?
Steps to Take:
1. Do some research online for long-term care facilities you’re interested in; look at Google reviews, look at their websites, and speak with others
2. Visit in person; it might be helpful to take a healthcare professional with you for the tour (staff at Silver Lights are available to come with you any time)
3. Put your top 5 long-term care homes on the list (1 being your top choice and 5 being your last choice)
**It is important to note that you must accept the bed offered to you, even if it’s not your first choice. However, keep your loved one on the list for your first choice Home and when the bed comes up, it will be offered, and you can move them.
Things to Look for During a Facility Tour:
1. Is the facility clean? Are there any odours present?
2. Do the residents look well put together? Do they have food on their face or clothes?
3. How do staff speak to residents?
4. Are the residents engaged in an activity or are they sitting alone in the hall or in front of a TV?
5. Are there call bells going off? How long does it take for the call bells to be answered?
6. Do staff knock on residents’ doors before entering?
7. If visiting during mealtime, ask to look into the dining room. How are staff interacting with the residents? Do the meals look appetizing? How are the staff feeding residents?
